L2D Architects was founded in January 2015 by Colin Sakinofsky and David Fletcher. Colin and David each bring more than 25 years of project experience in the research and education sector. Colin and David were formerly part of the research team at S2F, a multidisciplinary architecture and engineering firm where Colin became the Director of Research and led the architectural and engineering teams. Colin retained this senior position when S2F was acquired by SKM and then by Jacobs International. Some of the experience referenced on this website is attributed to S2F/SKM/Jacobs and reflect projects where Colin and David were design leaders.

Our point of difference is our unique approach which is founded on our ability to speak the language of science, supported and augmented with extensive breadth and depth of relevant experience. L2D Architects considers itself as a “design enabler” to the project delivery process. Our process is inclusive and aims to engage users throughout all stages of a project. It is fundamental to understand the science involved and tune the design accordingly. Our methodology has been developed over 500+ projects and provides robust design solutions that will not only serve immediate users but will offer flexibility and future proofing.
Our team is carefully selected for their experience, some of whom are recognised across Australia and the World as experts in their field. Our value lies in providing innovative operational solutions to the ever-changing demands of science whilst balancing this with the demands of budget and programme. We frequently partner with other architects to collaborate on larger projects where each practice brings their experience and skill to the project.
Our clients include the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, and multiple universities including University of Melbourne, Deakin University and La Trobe University. We enjoy longstanding engagements with these esteemed institutions with whom we have collaborated on multiple projects.
