Property Council of Australia Christmas Lunch 2023

The highlight was watching Brad Blaze do his high speed paintings. Each one had to be painted in the time it took to sing a famous (rock) song.
It was awesome to watch especially for someone like me with a keen interest in art.
Three songs = three paintings.
· First Elton John. Painted upside down.
· Then Taylor Swift, which was an all black painting, before Brad created a minor explosion of glitter which stuck to the wet paint – very clever.
· And the portrait of Freddie Mercury of Queen. Which was painted with a cardboard cover over what would be the face, and then ignited like a sparkler to reveal the pre-painted face.

All very cleverly executed and very engaging. Then the paintings were part of the raffle - all in the name of charity for the Property Industry Foundation.

The Massey University (@masseyuni) Innovation Centre contains research and teaching laboratories for chemistry, ecology, life sciences (PC2), food science and information technology. Teaching spaces feature the ability to switch from undergraduate to postgraduate requirements to maximise infrastructure usage for year-round optimisation. Spaces are also designed to switch from life sciences to engineering, responding to industry variables. Integrating environmental sciences with molecular and microbiology, the centre creates changeable PC1/PC2 regulatory barriers. The arrangement and placement of teaching and research laboratories was essential to address “immutably flexible laboratory use”. Modelling of this kind will be invaluable to achieve “value for money maximisation”.

L2D’s recent trip to New Zealand for the 2023 ABSANZ Conference in Queenstown also gave us the opportunity to travel north to visit our now completed Auckland Massey University Innovation Centre (IC) – a building for science that L2D won (as Laboratory Planners) in a design competition (2016) with Athfield Architects (@athfieldarchitects).

The IC is a 10,200m2 STEM facility over four large floor plates, and is a flexible scientific research and teaching facility located centrally in Massey University`s Auckland campus. The development formed a significant part of the campus site planning and a catalyst for future campus development, including site flows and open space development.

L2D at ABSANZ 2023 Queenstown NZ

A magnificent and successful ABSANZ Conference, this time in Queenstown New Zealand. As usual, highly informative and entertaining, whilst serving a higher purpose than just biosafety in this part of the world and beyond.

A truly great mix of presentations and discussions for anyone interested in current science affairs, covering Teaching, Science. Engineering. and Architectural design – highly relevant to the biosafety and biosecurity world issues – in the broadest sense of the word. Focused Papers that are useful and informative. Some even funny. Like the Zombie Apocalypse for microbiology students by Flinders University – a lesson in engaging the younger generation of students and enhancing the relevance of STEM&M. We should ask Steve Spielberg to turn it into a movie !!

As a Founding Board Member, I encourage as many of you to join ABSANZ as members and share the passion that gives back to our community.
ABSANZ fulfills a critical role for the benefit of Australia and New Zealand Biosafety and Biosecurity objectives. Equally. Next year, same time, different place, Queensland Brisbane Australia. From one Queen prefix to another …

The Crick has over a thousand two hundred researchers “working on important questions to help understand human health and disease”.
The Crick is named after Francis Crick, “not because he is one of Britain’s greatest scientists but also because it is founded on qualities he embodied: curiosity, scientific excellence, collaboration and multi-disciplinary approach”.

Sir Paul Nurse, Director of the Francis Crick Institute notes” an effective science community should be interactive and collaborative, and encourage the constant exchange of data, ideas and hypotheses. A scientist whose thoughts are constrained, who is too strongly directed or who is unable to freely exchange ideas will not be an effective scientist”.

As an architect and laboratory planner it’s one of those inspirational life opportunities to visit such institutions and even better with an extensive guided tour - many thanks to The Crick.

A visit to The Crick Institute, London
A magnificent day at The Crick London on Friday 19th August with my friend, Dr Stephen Fox, who is both a pathologist and researcher from Melbourne`s Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre . The Crick kindly gave us an extended tour of the inner workings of this prestigious institution. And being with Stephen - a “user” (so to speak) of such facilities, it offered a different view and focus to what architects, project managers and engineers normally search for.

Last week saw the publication of the magnificent work by Sicona Battery Technology in The Australian Newspaper, developing the next generation battery materials “used in the anodes (negative electrodes) of lithium-ion (“Li-ion”) batteries that enable electric-mobility and storage of renewable energy.”

From L2D`s perspective, it was a fun ride developing the business case in plan and 3D imagery this year, utilising the knowledge gained from working with Introba (Integral) and Denton Corker Marshall for the Deakin University BatTRI Hub completed last year. This is the real joy of contributing to the knowledge economy as laboratory planners at L2D Architects.

Serendipitously the original IP was developed in a previous S2F project, the Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM) at the University of Wollongong – amazing how the wheel turns!

AIA Vic Chapter - Design Awards Presentation.

The Quality Control Laboratory (QCL) is now complete and being handed over for its important scientific purpose. This specialised PC2 containment facility is designed as part of a suite of interlinked specific spaces forming a key part of Biomedical capability in Clayton.
QCL plays a vital role in the development of new vaccines and provides a key downstream function associated with cGMP cleanroom production.
The project includes a series of interconnected specialist rooms, a refurbishment of a series of spaces adjoining a GMP facility. It now has great access to natural light and a view into landscaping enhancing the workplace and supporting staff wellbeing.

The design team comprised of:
• L2D as lead design consultant
• Stantec – building services engineering
• Quantity surveyor – A2M
• Building Contractor – Arete.
This team has now delivered a series of very important projects for a Federal Government client.

In looking for a clear definition of what a QC lab is, we share this information/descriptor from Basic Medical Key – Insight Engine, which provides a really good definition:
“In pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, support laboratories play the crucial role of testing the product to verify its quality, safety, and stability at each stage of the manufacturing process, packaging, and product release. These labs are referred to as quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) laboratories and exist to support the manufacturing operations of the facility. The design of QA/QC laboratories requires an understanding of the facility; the processes and equipment used in the lab; the hazardous materials present; the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems used; and other requirements. Consideration must be given to the safety and protection of lab personnel and the product. Despite their small size relative to the facility at large, QA/QC laboratories are necessary to the operation of the facility, and a thorough understanding of good design practices is necessary to guarantee the efficiency and viability of the facility.” ...
